Re: Looking for the earliest siting of the Gila cowl
I'm with Ben, the Gilla Cowl combined with the better chest logo was a combo we saw in the 1979 LEGENDS show-- other times with the gilla he has the kind of awful hand made one. The story is on here somewhere isn't it Mr W, that the cowl was recovered by a seamstress FOR the LEGENDS special?
How many cowls did Adam own? I've heard him say he had five-- I'm not too sure I'd believe that and I think it's far more likely he kept one. The most authentic one which as far as I know is still in existence is the one from the first Joker episode which Adam referred to as one that he was wearing and was bonked on the head. That's backed up during the fight scene.
I'm fascinated by the Gilla Cowl, I'm curious Chuck if anyone has ever asked you to replicate one of those?

Great shot A.P.!
Nope Andy, no one has requested the Gila Cowl. Thank goodness!!!
I guess that is what I'm trying to verify. Was the London cowl recovered to become the Gila or did he have two cowls post-show.
I know the verified cowl he had post show was from the second season.
The Gila shell matches it and I thought the London cowl was another cowl from the second season but now I'm not sure. It may be the same shell.
I thought if there was a shot of the Gila prior to a confirmed date of the London cowl, it would confirm that he had two cowls.
The London Cowl paint resembles the original cowl cover and I think it was used as reference.

Re: Looking for the earliest siting of the Gila cowl
You have it Mike, that's why its been called that.
For those that don't know-- The Gila cowl was originally one of the TV Show cowls, as Chuck stated above it over the years the cowls deteriorate-- not to cause a panic over reproduction cowl owners-- but faced with daily use, hot studio lights and the rigors involved with filming, travel, moving them around, handling, etc-- they would fade and eventually the fabric itself would start to detach and look lumpy. So when there was an event (Possibly Legends of the Superheroes 1979) a seamstress was brought in to recover the whole cowl, so she stripped off all the fabric and replaced it-- only trouble was she didn't take any photos or didn't bother looking at reference because she made the markings wrong, but worse, she made the neck too short so it didn't fit under the cape like the original ones did-- creating that Gila effect, Gilla, Gila, Gill-man I've heard it called many things. But that's the story.
Meanwhile if you remember the PSA for fair wages which starred Yvonne and Burt in their roles while Dick Gautier (Hymie the Robot from GET SMART) filled in as Batman; THAT cowl was the pink cowl repainted blue.

Re: Looking for the earliest siting of the Gila cowl
I always thought that the Legends of The Superheroes production staff were the ones that re-covered the cowl and provided the updated pieces for Adam and Burt. Can't recall where I got that info tho.
BTW, I've said it before and I'll say it again.....I love the gila cowl! Love it! Not for the show, but because it is so 70's. I watched the original broadcast and noticed the change right away. Loved it then, love it now. Don't debate me

Re: Looking for the earliest siting of the Gila cowl
Wally told the tale about the "Gila" cowl after meeting the lady who did the recovering. In the same interview I did of Wally back in 2004, I was the idiot who first referred to it as being like a "GIla Monster" instead of the correct name "Frilled lizard" for what I meant. I clearly don't know my reptiles. "Gila Cowl" stuck ever since.
Know the difference:
