Topps trading cards and Life cover homage

Post by Lou Szabo »

I was reading through 13th Dimensions article on Topps card painter Norm Saunders
https://13thdimension.com/norm-saunders ... paintings/

I love his paintings, and I noticed one looked very familiar.
Here's the Topps Norm Saunders painting from the RED Bat series, Card #12A

Of course we all know the Life Magazine Adam West March 11, 1966 cover

Here are some variations

Definitely some similarities there but I'm going to chalk it up to coincidence rather than swipe-- the angle of the upper body is different. I'm sure Bob Powell and Saunders had some pre release photos for reference, but I'm pretty sure the Life photo was taken after the show hit the air. I remember reading the cards were produced before January 66, which makes sense, they'd need about five months to get these paintings done.
