rickrickrick's Batgirl

Post by rickrickrick »

Wasn't sure where to post this. Bat Events? Well, not really. But it was an event for me.

My daughter, who is now six, has enjoyed seeing me in my Batman outfit. She has sat in my lap looking at this board with me, and got to know Batgirl through looking at pictures of Yvonne Craig here. Late this past spring, she started saying she wanted a Batgirl costume, and wanted to be Batgirl for Halloween. I tried to discourage her, because I knew she was sort of claustrophobic about wearing masks, and I figured the phase would soon pass and she'd be asking for Disney princess stuff again. But she kept asking, and when IFC started showing the series, she watched the Batgirl (and even the non-Batgirl) episodes with genuine excitement. So, I started making her a costume - but then I got buried in a project, and knew I'd never have the time to finish it, so I commissioned one from our very own Catgreg. I told my daughter I would visit her Y summer camp as Batman on the final day, and she said she wanted to go as Batgirl. So, that became the plan. I was very apprehensive - my daughter had never spent more than 30 seconds in a mask, and doesn't even like wearing gloves.

So, the costume arrived two days before the event, and she couldn't wait to put it on. She put on the mask without hesitation, and didn't fuss about the gloves at all. I had to pry it off her to get her to go to bed! She was very insistent that she would wear it to the Y, and we would go together as Batman and Batgirl.

The visit to the Y couldn't have gone better! My daughter was SO excited to be Batgirl, carried around the little foam batarang I made for her all day, and enthusiastically posed for zillions of pictures with the summer campers and counselors. It was amazing! She was in costume nearly three hours! Here is a picture taken afterwards.

It was a day I will always cherish. I'd like to give a huge public shout-out to Catgreg for his fantastic kid-sized Batgirl costume. And, actually, to everyone here - especially those who contribute to the Crafts section - for making stuff like this possible, though their support of this board.

Those are some great looking costumes and a nice story. My son has wanted a batman costume since we have started watching on IFC.

It's just so unfortunate that this precious wee child will soon outgrow that Batgirl outfit. But , of course, I'm sure that rickrickrick think's it's tough dealing with her simply growing up. Pardon me while I shed a bat-tear.

Thanks, MV.

Sol, she will at least be able to wear it through Halloween, which is the next big goal. I just hope her boots still fit by then!

After she outgrows it, I will happily pass it on to the next bat family, and hope they can enjoy it as much as she has!

To rickrickrick: Both of you have a terrific Halloween. I hope you'll post a picture or two of the day. Reading your post and seeing your photo above makes me marvel at what a proud papa you clearly are. Best wishes!

So cool that your daughter shares your Bat-interest! Both your costumes are excellent! She must be over the moon being Batgirl!
