What color should Dick Sprang's Batsuit be?

Post by Larry A. »

Hi Folks,
Admittedly, this ties in w/ my other Dick Sprang thread, but I need advice: What color "Blue" should I use to get the effect seen in the 1950s comics? It seems that where it is in shadow or little light, the blue is almost black.
Any and all ideas will be gratefully received and considered. :D

Thank You all in advance,

Larry

Well, I recall reading somewhere that, initially, the blue that the comics used (and still do) was a result of the limitation of the media (read: expense) and therefore, was meant to represent black in many cases. Kind of like light refracting off the black which gave it more artistic flair and, like cartoon characters with 3 fingers & a thumb, it became tradition.

By the time of the Sprang-era Batman, the black shadow over the front of the cowl is a constant and the rest is blue (with exception of the trunks which appear to be black with the blue highlights added for artistic purposes on the sides or from behind, depending upon perspective of the panel) So I would suggest following this mode and then you just have to decide whether or not you want a comic book blue vs. another shade.

If you've ever seen the Ideal Batman helmut from the 1960s, there's a reference for how your cowl (and costume) could look with a comic book blue color.

One more thought. The producers of the TV show undoubtedly used a fantasy to reality approach to Adam's costume. You appear to operating from the fantasy to fantasy in reality concept. If that's how you feel, then the comic book blue color is your target.

Hi BFM,
Thank You WAY much for the input. I, too, had heard that blue indicated highlights of black....kind of like ol' Superman has blue hair highlights.
I am thinking that I will stay with the AW color scheme thanks to Your input. I REALLY do appreciate Your input, old Chum! Any other ideas You have will always be welcome!!!!!
Thanks, and Cheers,

Larry

BTW, BatFanMan, I have seen the ideal Toy helmet. That's the other thing that has helped me stay w/ AW's Batsuit coloring. Thank You again, for the input.

It's going to take a little time since I am a disabled Viet Vet, but since this, along with a full sized 1950 Batmobile is on my "bucket list", [guess which one has the best chance of getting done], I really want to get the suit built. Heck, I'd love to get the 1950 Batmobile built, for that matter.
I've decided to go with the Gray for the suit, and the A.W. Blue for the rest of the suit. I don't know if A.W.'s gloves had non-skid in the palms are not, but I'm going to have it in mine so I can have photos of me swinging on the Bat-Rope....just for grins and giggles,
I can't say it enough, BFM, I appreciate Your ideas and help.
Thanks,
Larry

You're welcome. Good choices on the gray and navy.
