Episode 78 tank used
In episode 78 Penguin's Disastrous End, what type of tank was used as the gold tank? I just watched that episode and couldn't figure out if it was a Sherman or Patton or some other tank that was painted gold.

It was a Stuart Light Tank. It has been awhile since I've seen the epsiode so I can't be sure if it is the early M3 version or the later M5 version.
The Stuart was used in World War II as a reconnaissance vehicle as it had very light armor and a very small cannon. It could not fight enemy tanks, but could protect its crew from enemy infantry and it could get out of harms way quickly when needed. Most of them were used in the Pacific as small tanks were much more useful in jungle and rough terrain. In addition, the Germans had very good anti-tank weapons which would easily destroy a small tank like the Stuart, while the Japanese never developed such weapons.
The Stuart Tank was named in honor of the Civil War general, J.E.B. Stuart. General Stuart was a brilliant cavalry officer who served in the Confederate Army for General Robert E. Lee.

WOW! I always wanted to know that. The eppy was just on Me-TV and I wondered the same thing. Now what can you tell us about Penguin's submarine? I found a very grainy photo of the Penguin's tank and I am fairly certain it is the M5 version.
For those who care, gold is a terrible choice of metal for a tank. It is a very soft metal and would provide very little protection. I hazard to guess that a police pistol might be able to penetrate armor if it was made from gold.
I realize the show is fantasy, but making a tank in a day or two (or whatever time frame they had on the show) is completely ridiculous. It would take years to build one of those from scratch and they had very little equipment. I am part of the team restoring a B-17 and we have been working on it for 5 years and have another 8 to 10 years to go and we are buying major components like the engines.

Here's the photo I found...I think you're correct. M5. What about the Penguin's submarine? Any info on what it was?

The submarine looks to be based on a World War II German U-boat designated the Type VII. It closely resembles a Type VII, but there are some accuracy problems. Most notably, the large sponson that ran near the waterline in the conning tower area is missing.
Several websites list the submarine as being built for the forgettable Frank Sinatra movie "Assault on a Queen" and then reused for Batman. In Batman we only see it float on the surface so it may actually be just a raft and not even a real boat.
The underwater scenes are clearly done with a model that resembles the surfaced submarine where the Bat-fight takes place. The model only has one forward torpedo tube which is clearly wrong for a Type VII U-boat.
