Be sure to check out the latest episode of Comic Book Central - my conversation with Batman '66 writer, Stephen Kandel! On this episode, I chat with Stephen about his time on the set of Batman '66, his False Face episodes, Batman's FIRST 3-parter featuring Joker and Penguin, and how Stephen's kids inspired his five Bat-scripts!

That was amazing that Kandel didn't know there was a False Face in the comics until you told him! We'll have to correct all the people who have written that the TV False Face was based on the one in the comics!

No doubt there was a list of potential villains when the TV series was first being planned and the False Face name stuck out. Doesn't mean he researched the original comic character, just that the villain's name suggests the modus operandi. So still "based on" the name, if not the comic origins. (In the 70s, I used to assume that False Face was simply a less scary version of Two-Face.)

Supposedly the first Riddler episode was more based upon the Joker of the comics than the lesser-known Riddler, and then Cesar Romero delved into the Joker in a different direction to come up with his interpretation. I would guess that Louie the Lilac was a character inspired by character traits from the comics' Poison Ivy. And we know that Zelda (and Eivol Ekdal) came from the Carnardo story.
"Holy nostalgia, Batman!"

I suppose that's possible! Not clear whether he got the name from a list or came up with it himself -- neither one is really a stretch. One would think that if there were a list, though, he'd have gone and checked the actual comic for more info on the comics version.

Of course, that was 50+ years ago. As sharp as he still is at 90 years old (!), he likely doesn't remember everything! Who would?! He may well have known in 1965/66 that False Face was in the comics, and forgot...
