Million dollar Debut of Batgirl outfit

Post by Larry A. »

Hi to all!
This should probably go in the Off-topic Lounge area but since it deals with Catwoman's outfit, I'll rely on the Moderators to put it where they think best. ANYWAY..........................

I have been looking for any information on the 66 Catwoman unitard on this site, but no luck. Two Friends of mine who live on opposite sides of the world have asked me about how they could make the black, comic book Batgirl with the Blue/black cape and cowl with the Yellow gloves, belt and tall, high-heeled Batboots.

Might I ask anyone who knows or has copies of the 66 Catwoman suit info PLEASE E-mail me on the info?????????????????????????

Thanks and Cheers.

The Batgirl costume you're describing is available from cosplay vendors, but the quality may not be great.

I'd suggest checking Etsy for a black long sleeve catsuit such as https://www.etsy.com/listing/699825954/ ... hare_v4_lx

If you Google Batgirl costume you''ll a lot of female cosplayers on Pinterest in the black and yellow version. Some are wearing latex, some suits look more like form fitting armor, so it depends what they're trying to achieve.

WilliamsStudio2 had a Catwoman catsuit before, I believe, but it is not currently listed as available.

Thanks, Drew! The problem that I have with so many of them is that the jumpsuit LOOKS like rubber! Even the Lurex doesn't look like rubber. What I am looking at is getting the effect of the comic book with the glitter of the Cat Woman jumpsuit.

I have checked Google and haven't seen any that have the Blue cowl and caper per the comic.

I think that I will check with Chuck and Lynne.

Thanks for responding, my Friend!

Cheers

I remember an interview with Lee Meriwether where she said the fabric had metallic thread in it that would get really hot when exposed to the sun. GVM designs did a reproduction for the Hollywood Museum, so if anyone knows how to contact him maybe he could provide some assistance.

I don't think he's really been active over here at all since we made the move from the old YABB site back 2012

Vickie and I have made our own Catsuits and Batgirl suits for years but it's been a long time since the last ones were tackled. We never did commissions so people forget how much we pioneered that challenge before many others and passed that info on. I even helped Greg (GVM) with his initial start and info for Catwoman and Batgirl. He ran with the ball and then some. He even made a Catsuit for Vickie early on to show his thanks. We've gone through a few. lol.

But yeah, I know a thing or two about those suits.

The stretch lame fabrics for both had a metallic weave that went through and no glitter at all. Any spandex for a similar effect is going to look like plastic, rubber or Christmas wrapping paper due to the lack of the weave texture. The stretch lame is only a two-way stretch and the outfit has to be tailor fitted to the wearer. No patterns out there to my knowledge but Vickie and I can certainly tell you where all the seams and darts are suppose to go if you find someone willing to custom build it for your cosplayer. We recommend the duct tape pattern method for this sort of item. Plenty of YouTube instruction on that. One wears a T-shirt with the desired bra for shape and then the torso to the upper thighs gets covered in duct tape to the contours of the body. Then draw out the seam markings on the taped area. Cut the shirt along the seams and you have a form fitting pattern to the individual. Trace the flattened duct taped shirt pieces on paper for the sewing patterns. If one gets that far then I can instruct you which directions the stretch of the fabric is supposed to go so that it form fits properly.

I just found my old illustration of the seams from wayback.

Thanks, Scott. The cowl will be the real trick. I'll figure it out as given the problems Chuck and Lynne are having with forgers(?) I would rather figure the cowl out on my own. The other thing about working out the patterns on my own is that if someone wishes to copy my pattern, no one else need get the shaft. On the patterns that I used to make when I did my own costumes, I always tried to have 7 small points of difference from the originals I might copy, as rare as that was for me to copy it.

BTW, Scott, I AM curious as to which way the stretch goes on each piece, please????????

Thanks again, Scott

I don't know why I didn't think of this method. We use a similar method for making patterns for steel and aluminum parts for the B-17. We fill in rusted areas and holes with Bondo and then sand that area smooth (probably skip this step with your model!). We then tape Saran wrap to the original part and then cover that with duct tape. We repeat the duct tape at a 90-degree angle to the original layer. When you pull off the duct tape you have something not quite two dimensional, but reasonably close. Sort of two and half dimensional. Lay that out as flat as you can on a piece of flat metal and draw an outline. Cut that out and beat on it with nylon hammers (another step that doesn't work well with people). Sadly, we rarely get to use seams and darts. Instead, for tight corners we flute and pound, flute and pound, flute and pound.

Come to think of it, I haven't seen GVM on this board for quite a while...
Some of Greg's mannequins were offered for sale on Ebay in summer 2017.
