Which Batmobile came first: Corgi or Aurora?

Post by Lou Szabo »

There’s a discussion with the Corgi Collectors Manufacturer regarding the Corgi Batmobile release and the Aurora Batmobile release,,
And did the influence each other. I found these on line

So, October 1966 tracks for the Corgi as Santa gifted one to me for Christmas 1966, and I received the Aurora Batmobile for Easter 1967.

Anyone else have any better information?

As a kid I got them in reverse order which would have been about 1971 or so-- I loved them both-- but my mother hated puting the model kit together but she was a good sport about it. The model did not hold up to play so after she built three of them I think she was happy to find the Corgi-- which was virtually undestroyable-- don't think I didn't try.

The timeline illustration does not show the first purple box Aurora Batmobile, it only shows the second light blue box.

I'm pretty sure the first purple box Aurora Batmobile was out in 1966. The second one was made in light blue so people could see the Batmobile better against the background. Plus they made a second mold of the Batmobile to keep up with demand.

I wish Aurora did not rush the Batmobile as they made it too short and stubby. They should have used the Revell 1956 Lincoln Futura model kit.

A timeline of Aurora releases.

Not sure of the exact date they were first released?
Box variations/releases
486-98 ( no text lower right side of box top)
486-100 (copywrite symbol. BY NATIONAL PERIODICAL PUBLICATIONS, INC.)
486-129 (INSTRUCTIONS EN FRANCAIS A L'INTERIEUR) Made in Canada on end
486-130 (INSTRUCTIONS EN FRANCAIS A L'INTERIEUR) Made in Canada on end

Variations, There were at least 2 box graphics with slightly different looks, one light blue, and one darker, purple box variety. Then there was the mail away Burry's cookie promo. That model came in a plain brown cardboard mailing box with the model in a plastic bag. The decals for the door bats/ wheel bats on each were laid out differently on the waterslide decal sheet.

Searching out the comic books I found that many have this advert on the back cover in their October 1966 issue. I have not found one earlier.

Batman #185
Detective Comics #356
Captain Hunter #103
Superman #190
Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane #69
Captain Hunter #103

I'm not an expert on this but I think the month on the covers of DC comics at that time didn't always match the actual month they were available for purchase. For example the October 1966 issue of Batman was available for purchase on August 11th .
