Hard copies in stores today. Just picked up mine, including the Case "chase" variant cover....
Re: SPOILERS: Just Read Batman 66 Comic #1-Discussion Thread
Just sayin, but if they had offered it to me I would have stayed much tighter to what the series established, especially in Season One, while exploring bat villains both classic to the series and ones who weren't around yet. My lean would have been to approach it either like Season Four or as Unfilmed episodes of Season One.
Anyway, they have my number if they want to call.

Citizens,
I bought the old school style comic book and have read it and the thread so far. The first issue is enjoyable enough to buy the second. The story, characters, and overall tone echo the show well enough for me to give it some thought.
The initial scene with Riddler is ambitious enough to seem like a comic book plot from back in the day, though Batman's initial appearance may have been a little sudden given Bruce and Dick appear in the opening scene. The riddle leads to Catwoman's establishment. and the story becomes a little nonsensical.
Catwoman's men not being dressed as henhmen makes sense if she is really trying to be an entrepreneur. Alternatively, a legitimate businesswoman would not order her goons, whom she would not employ anyway, to attack the city's beloved heroes. After Riddler blew up her club, her anger toward him makes sense.
In terms of the Batcave scene, Afred using the Batpole is out of character, but allows the book to address the question of how our heroes change clothes while sliding down the pole. Also, no masks in the cave make sense and is a worthwhile departure from the show.
Looking forward to the next issue.

They need to call you, Andy. While I'm happy to have the comic available, I would absolutely love it if people like you had a hand in it.
A side note- curious as to who picked up the variant Case cover aside from myself? Does anyone care about the "variant" angle?

There are people involved with this project on upcoming issues that i'm personally, super excited to have on the task. Without intending to be overly secretive, I think you will all agree when the time comes!svl wrote:They need to call you, Andy. One minor quibble about the artwork:
Now let me again note, I am a writer by trade, NOT an artist. I cannot draw anything beyond a stick figure, so I have the utmost respect for people such as Andy Fish who can draw well. Hard for me to criticize something I never could do. I feel more comfortable critiquing writing because I do it myself for a living and know what goes into the process.
That said, I was a little disappointed Julie Newmar was not drawn with a mask, except maybe in one panel from a distance. I can understand the artist, Jonathan Case, not wanting to obscure her lovely face, but I do think a mask is a part of CW's charm and mystique, and it would have made good sense for her to be wearing one during the big 'Bat-detective' scene in part 3. Just my .02.

Sad to report that one of the stories out of San Diego is the book is not selling as well as it was hoped, I don't know if that's DCs disappointment, although I doubt they'd ever say anything negative about sales publicly, or retailers. I know my local shop moved a lot of copies of the book.
As much as its not perfect, and I think that's a high mark to set, I did enjoy it and ill stick around.

I enjoyed the first issue but was a little distracted by the odd blue outlines in the artwork. To me it looked like the the colour had been offset incorrectly. I actually downloaded the digital edition as well because I thought there'd been an error in the printing. For those who haven't seen it, the story opens with just the art. Then the speech bubbles appear as you tap the screen - one phrase at a time. It's almost a 'motion' comic.
For me the character designs of Alfred, Aunt Harriet, Commissioner Gordon is an indication of how difficult it must be to tie up the release of the series in DVD. If I was an heir of the actors involved in the series I would actively want their likeness featured in a comic... or maybe WB were just trying to avoid expense.
I did pick up on the look of Catwoman's henchman. That was a glaring oversight in my view. How hard could it have been to get that right in a comic titled Batman '66..?

The off registration style is intentional and done as an homage to 60s pop art-- I like it-- makes the book stand out and creates a character for the color itself.
I find the technique striking, some of the characters fall off model and look a little sloppy at times-- there are a couple of Catwoman poses that look rushed to me, but overall I really like the work.

I really like the comic. Thought it was fun, good reflection of the show but can stand on its own, as well. The art is fabulous. So excited to see Catwoman in the first issue too. It's also just nice having something of the 66 series around. I'm pretty happy with it.
